Late last month, Eversource posted a notice about winter pricing. Basically, standard offer rates depend on natural gas prices because natural gas power generators. Prices tend to be higher when there is more demand for power. For most of the country, winter electricity rates are high because of the demand for heating during the cold bitter months. In other words, standard offer prices are likely to rise with the new year.

It’s also important to remember that Eversource cannot generate power. Instead, it has to purchase power from generator companies. Their prices depend on the often-volatile natural gas market. In addition, CT energy bills have risen because of public benefits charges, which largely stems from a 2017 deal lawmakers made to keep the Millstone Power Station running. You should also check if you qualify for the Winter Protection Program which could protect you from shut offs from now through May 1.
